“Photo Night Live is a weekly web TV show from the UK that aims to pull together the photography community once a week with special guests from the photo world discussing a chosen hot topic.

So fast forward to today & I got a note from Kerry that the podcast we did with Gavin Seim went live last night on Camera Dojo when I was at dinner. In this conversation, we chatted about various sales techniques that he learned about at the Wall Portrait Conference he recently attended. He totally shared some fantastic ideas with us about how to approach educating our clients with large prints and canvas wraps.

He shared his thoughts on thinking of photography more as art and like a piece of furniture that will compliment their homes, instead of just some snap shots that you stick into a cheap plastic frame. And, not only that, but how he uses a projector to show his clients how their portraits will look on their walls. Cool!

Some great topics were covered too from posing different sized people using a variety of lenses that give you different perspectives in your shots some killer lighting ideas.

My good friend; Brian Noah asked me about shooting at different locations – one of which being a favourite of mine – Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  We also covered how it is imperative to make sure you have the proper credentials to shoot on location (e.g.; permits) and some of my crazy insane “stealth” tactics for staying under the radar when shooting in public locations.

This week we sat down with the uber-cool Mike Larson hailing out of San Luis Obispo, California.  During our chat, we covered some good reads he suggested (The 4 Hour Work Week, The E-Myth Revisited & Never Eat Alone) along with the main thread of his podcast being client relationships.  IMHO, this is paramount in any business and I am most impressed with how Mike has built his business to where it is now;  self perpetuating solely on referrals.

Mike’s been around the block and if you ever want to have an in-depth under-the-hood day with him, check out his Seminars – they’re sure to change your life & thus your business.  You just need to be sure to ask him to do his infamous “Camera Toss!”

Basically to put it quite clear & plainly – Thomas has a goal of having a million images published before he dies. At first blush, this doesn’t sound like much, especially if you’re shooting as much as we do – which can be upwards of a few thousand to nearly 10,000 photos per month.

But for Thomas, he has to shoot every day 300-400 images and have them posted online every week on Flickr!  There are a lot of people out there that are doing a photo a day (not me, I’m happy to have my West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week done each week), but imagine doing 30-40.  That’s totally crazy-insane!

In our conversation, Thomas chats about his gear, his work-flow, and what keeps him motivated. This is a huge week of inspiration and I’m hoping that this will inspire you to take on your own photography project regardless of the scale.

As an owner of a small business – running your own business can be a daunting task, especially if you’re a one man show taking care of all the aspects of it. And! To make matters more intense – photographers are artists first & business people second, which is wherein lies the majority of our struggles.

I recently went to the Fast Track Photographer Roadshow in San Diego & had my eyes opened to an amazing world of better time management along with stronger tools and services to help me run and build my business not only to be more efficient – but able to service my clients better.

Over the past few weeks we both recently upgraded our camera bodies.  Kerry upgraded from a 30D to a 50D and I traded in a couple of my 40Ds to a 5D Mk II. So in this episode we both “geek out” a bit and discuss the new cameras and some of the features that are not only dope to us, but help us produce even better killer photos for our clients.
