A Wedding Tip For Guests About Wedding Photography Etiquette By Esquire Photography In Huntington Beach

Good evening Esquire Photography HQ in Newport Beach! I’m one slightly frustrated Newport Beach Wedding Photographer who’s once again needing to remind wedding guests that just because you own a DSLR, it DOES NOT make you a professional photographer.

If I went out & bought a flute, does that mean I’m qualified to perform with the LA Philharmonic? If I bought a basketball, does that mean I’m qualified to play with the Lakers?

If you weren’t hired to capture all the memories of the wedding day, why are you telling me that you brought your camera “just in case” or my favourite – you’re a “professional photographer” (with your Canon Rebel & pop up flash) and are there to capture photos for the bride & groom. If that’s the case, then you should show up with a computer, speakers & music & push the DJ out of the way. Or why don’t you bring flowers? Or a cake? OR Better yet – YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

Also, the next Uncle Bob or Aunt Betty that sticks his or her camera over my shoulder next to my one good ear that I can hear out of will be asked to put your camera away and/or removed from the wedding. I will exercise the clause in my contract that protects my client; the bride & groom who paid me hard earned money to capture their wedding without interruption by YOU; the GUEST OF THE WEDDING.

Bottom line is, you’re DISRESPECTING the bridal couple & their families by doing what you’re doing. NOT me. I’ve captured MILLIONS of photos for tens of thousands of clients from Los Angeles, to Berlin, Germany, Paris, France & London, England in nearly 29 years so trust me, I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING!

With that said, I’m not going to reinvent the wheel & share a previous story that I’ve shared consistently AT LEAST once a year since I first wrote it & recorded the video two years ago with you.

Thank you for reading, watching & if you’re that person who disrespects the bride & groom, I welcome your comments on why you feel entitled to do what you do.

Last week I met with Bernadette and her fiance’: Vlad at the Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach where my client turned great friend; David Jacob works at to chat about their wedding over some beverages and delicious food. They had some really sharp questions about wedding etiquette – but more importantly wedding guest etiquette.

Bernadette & Vlad’s concern was why with all the weddings that they had been to, why the wedding guests storm the alter where the wedding is at, cake cutting and other various special moments during the course of the wedding day.

This really opened up the floor for some terrific conversation and as I drove back to Huntington Beach from Laguna Beach that night, I really felt admonished to share my thoughts with you in a video. I launched it on You Tube & Facebook, which sparked quite a few views and a lot of traffic. So I thought I would share it here with you as well.

With the average wedding cost at over $25,000, it’s no wonder tackling the wedding photography is one of the most overwhelming tasks on your to-do list. BUT! I’ve rounded up a few steps to help you put it all in perspective and build a plan of attack.

Your wedding photography will provide a long-lasting remembrance of one of the happiest days of your life. The right professional photographer should deliver a complete selection of photographs that tell the full story of your day.

To help select your professional photographer, keep these thoughts in mind: Hire a professional, don’t trust your wedding memories to a friend with a camera. Interview as many photographers and review as many wedding photographs as you can to find the style you like. Reserve your photographer as early as possible. The best photographers tend to be booked months in advance.

Here are some simple questions to ask too:

What packages are offered?
How many photos are included in each package?
Are the “proofs” yours to keep?
Is there a set number of reprints you must order?
What is the cost for additional time or photos?
How much is the deposit and when is it due?
When is the balance due?
Is there a travel charge?
Are the digital files / negatives available to purchase? What is the resolution?
If so, do you have to wait a specified time before you can purchase them?

Most importantly, view his or her photographs. See if you like the style of photography and you seem to interact well with the possible photographer. Book as early as possible, some popular dates go quickly. Trust me I know! I’m already getting booked into 2013 for weddings & events.

Good morning from Newport Beach at Esquire Photography HQ in Orange County everyone!

I’m one Newport Beach Wedding Photographer who is totally flattered and honoured to share a VERY powerful note I received on my Facebook Page recently from Amy & Ron about a very special photo I captured with them and Amy’s Grandparents. In fact, this photo happens to be the LAST photo of Amy’s Grandmother before she went home and passed away over this weekend.

If you were keeping up with my social media updates on Sunday either on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+, then you more than likely know how passionate I am about photography. In fact, I truly believe in my heart to it’s very core that photography can change the world. If you are thinking how that can be, let’s examine a short list of emotions that are produced when looking at just one photo:

Happiness
Joy
Anger
Motivation
Calmness
Peace
Heartache
Positivity

And so much more! Here’s a LINK to a photo that I know changed the world. Tell me looking at that photo it doesn’t instill one or many emotions in you and with that thought – think of all the people who were motivated to Change The World after seeing it when it happened. Indeed ONE photograph of a man standing in front of a convoy of tanks can AND did CHANGE THE WORLD.

With that said, here is what Amy had to say about not only the photograph of her Grandmother, but about her experience working with me; David, a professional Newport Beach Wedding Photographer. Or as I like to call myself; “A guy with a camera.”

TOTALLY WONDERFUL & AMAZING & I’m completely moved by it. In fact, when I received the note from Amy & Ron – I sent a note to Kristine letting her know that I was in tears reading it. Definitely a comment I won’t forget for the rest of my life.

NOW for the Wedding Cautionary Tale.

I just shared on my myriad of social media platforms a couple who received some absolutely horrendous photography from their wedding vendor. Here is a LINK to the story online and a LINK to a discussion on my Facebook Fan Page.

That’s pretty intense! A couple paid hard earned money to a “professional” photographer who should have been able to deliver to them an amazing experience and even more importantly at the end of the day; incredible photography they can cherish and share with their family for the rest of their lives. There are NO re-takes on your wedding day.

If you’re wondering why I included this in a testimonial, it’s quite simple. Which experience would you rather have? Granted not all cheap photographers are going to do that, BUT there is something to be said when you hire the best you can afford and someone that has the experience to deliver the goods when thrown into any situation.

Or to mix it up a bit, who’s fault was it? The photographer who delivered what they were capable of (which I could stand up on my soap box all day about) or the couple who hired them knowing what the photographer could deliver (OR was deceived into thinking they could deliver). My thoughts are it’s both. Harsh? Yes. But it’s a real situation that unfortunately happened and I wanted to share a real answer to a real question.

So I really want to drive home the importance of doing your homework when hiring your professional photographer. Make sure you hire one that has the experience, technical know-how, gear and above all – a personality you’re going to enjoy working with for a deal of time. I know that I am an “acquired taste” of a character/person who wants to laugh, giggle and cry with every one of my couples at each & every wedding. From the minute we meet up to the end of the wedding day – I want to enjoy the wedding day as much as bride & groom did. Why? Because what I do is not a paycheck to me. It’s my livelihood and more importantly to me; it’s your wedding & you deserve the BEST. Period.

To wrap it up, I’m totally flattered by comments like this & it truly is one of the many reasons why I’ve been a professional photographer from Orange County/Los Angeles to Berlin, London and Paris, France for nearly 29 years (Yes, nearly three decades. Crazy I know!).

Good morning from Orange County everyone! This is one Newport Beach wedding photographer just hear from Duran Rex, who said he wanted to share a Wedding Tip for his TRex Tuesday. With that said, here is a Wedding Tip that Duran Rex wanted to share with you from Newport Beach. He said that one of the biggest things that will always will get shortened dramatically – will be the timeline for your wedding photography. You’ll want to treat your wedding timeline with almost the same zeal and somewhat twisted passion Gollum did for the ring in Lord of the Rings.

PSS, Here’s an awesome quote I recently shared on Twitter that I think helps keep the “Butterfly Effect” moving forward – spreading positivity. But! This quote seems very dichotomous to what we’re programmed to think in today’s society. “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished” Lao Tzu.” I love it! But more importantly – what do you think? Slightly too forward thinking or too old school. In a way, I like that it’s showing great things will happen an in their time. Yet, the impatient part of me is programmed and wants it all yesterday.
