Good Morning Everyone!  I’ve been meaning to share a couple of notes that Bill from Studio Z shared with me on Facebook about a really hot portrait session that I did for them recently.  I don’t have the online images ready for you just yet, but I did edit one (above) on my iPad over dinner that night after the shoot.  Here’s what “Kill Bill” had to say – check this out!

Also, Michelle & Bill used that photo for their business cards as well.  Check this photo out that Michelle sent me from her iPhone just before she left for Magic in Las Vegas this week.

AWESOME!!!!

I was so flattered & honoured that Michelle & Bill asked me to be their photographer to create the new faces of Studio Z in San Diego.  Even as I’m typing this to you, I’m quite beside myself that I was chosen.  But so totally happy that they did!

So if you’re wanting totally intense portraits like I did with Michelle & Bill down in Laguna Beach and you’re thinking to yourself…  Hey – I’d really like to contact this Orange County Wedding Photographer in Huntington Beach, California that shoots commercial-inspired Wedding Photography all over from OC to LA to Ventura and to San Diego.  Feel free to get in touch with me anytime.

I’m available just about 24/7 via Twitter, Facebook, the form on my contact page, or the old fashioned phone as well at 888.ESQ.PHTO (888.377.7486) or 562.225.5915.

I hope you’re having a super start to your Baby Friday and stay tuned as I’ll be a blogging machine over the next few weeks with so many events to share with you – cheers!

PS, I’ll be off the grid for a pinch until next week as it’s Katherine & I’s 5 year wedding anniversary tomorrow.  I’m taking her on a mini-break this weekend & then returning on Sunday for Carina & Tim’s Wedding down at the UCI University Club.  But I’ll be checking my iPhone from time-to-time/here & there when Katherine gives me the nod so I don’t wind up in a corner twitching from social media disconnect.  LOL!

Good morning from Huntington Beach, California everyone!  You may remember back in June a Billy Idol tune I shared with you.  It was one of my favourite songs for a West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week he totally rocks for the wedding season and it was; White Wedding.

So if you caught up with my Tweets & Facebook updates last Wednesday, I shot out to Pechanga in Temecula in Rio to catch Billy Idol live in a totally intimate theatre out there (I was told the theatre only seats 1,200 people) for a birthday gift to myself.  Well I have been totally dying to share a few snaps & video clips I shot with my iPhone 4 & Olympus P&S (Katherine had my G10… So sad!) and have a few that I would love to share with you today to accompany the West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week.

Billy Idol flat out killed it last week.  From bringing a fine-tuned band, to introducing a brand new song; “Scarred For Life” to bringing one of the absolutely best guitarists with him that he originally toured with; Steve Stevens.  “Scarred For Life” is so new, the stage hand brought out a music stand so Billy Idol could ensure he had all the lyrics correct.  Now that’s what I call bringing it out in the raw to the fans!

Speaking of bringing it out to the fans — Billy Idol NEVER lip-synced any part of his performance.  Which to me is what it’s all about.  It would be like me showing up to shoot an event & plugging in previously shot photos.  In my opinion, a true performer can sing, dance, and do everything that they set out to do.  Not hide behind the excuse that they’re a performer.  Bah!

Some of my favourite songs that Billy Idol & crew brought down the house with were:

  • Rebel Yell
  • Blue Highway
  • Ready Steady Go! (Generation X)
  • Dancin’ With Myself
  • White Wedding (partially a capella!)
  • Mony Mony!

If you’re a fan of Billy Idol & he’s coming to a city near you, I highly encourage you to take the time to go have a blast.  He was signing autographs for the fans during the concert in the front row, singing with fans in the front row & overall put on one flippin’ amazing performance.  It’s so worth every dime for the ticket!

But before you check out this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week and you’re thinking… Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Orange County Wedding Photographer that is on the bleeding edge of rockin’ fashion, music and videos, feel free to contact me anytime.

I’m available just about 24/7 via TwitterFacebook, the form on my contact page, or the old fashioned phone as well at 888.ESQ.PHTO (888.377.7486) or 562.225.5915.

So without further ado, I give you Billy Idol in “Eyes Without A Face” for the West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week and my slide show of some photos & videos I shot too.  And, don’t just have an awesome West Coast Wednesday, but make it a totally positive one for someone else too – cheers!

Good afternoon from Huntington Beach everyone!  I received a moving email from Jennifer & Joey about their stunning Redlands Wedding that I photographed at the Mitten Building.

You might remember Jennifer & Joey from their Rock-n-Romantic Engagement Shoot with one of my all time favourite sunsets portraits I have in the article.  They’re such an incredible couple full of love & the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face, any time of the day.

And, I’m soooo not kidding.  Check out this amazing email I received from them.  It’s to die for!

“David,

Jen and I cannot begin to express how amazed we are with the job you did with our wedding photos.  We had no doubt that we were going to be thoroughly pleased with our photos, but as usual you more than exceeded our expectations!

And to top it all off, not only were you the most amazing and talented wedding photographer we have ever met, you are also an amazing person.

Jen and I are truly blessed to have found you (I think this was implied when we hired you on the spot!), and have you photograph one of the most important days of our lives.  All of our friends and family could not agree more, they absolutely LOVE the pictures as well!

As we mentioned to you before, my Grandmother was actually brought to tears when she first saw them!  We cannot begin to express how many other compliments we received during and after the wedding in regard to you and your work!  Thank you so much for capturing our special day in a manner only you could have.

Not only does your work reflect our day even better than Jen and I can remember, you put a very special and artistic twist on everything!

I hope you don’t mind hanging out with us, because you have earned our business for life!

Hope to see you soon for some nachos & Newcastles!

Joey & Jen

Good afternoon from Huntington Beach everyone!  I’m digging myself out from a seemingly endless inbox of emails & read an interesting message from one of my premier Album vendors; Zookbinders.  They had some really (and I mean REALLY) interesting facts about brides, their wedding photography & wedding albums.

Over the past few months, Zookbinders spent a lot of time talking to brides to find out how they want their professional photographer to service them.

Their findings were quite interesting & I’ll share with you what they uncovered along with what I do to help deliver the best red carpet treatment to my couples.

▪    They’re overwhelmed by the number of images presented to them.  I tend to over-shoot & the number of photos that I’m delivering is on average 1/2 of what is typically shot.  I will do various angles of the same shot from time to time to ensure that I got it “just so.”

▪    Having to choose 100 or so images for their album from over 1000 images is daunting – they’d like to see the photographer help streamline the process and recommend about 100 for their album.  I’ll do my own “Artistic Edits” – which are used in my pre-design of the album.

▪    They feel there are too many choices in albums.  I currently offer three & it’s absolutely perfect.  Not too few & not too many.

▪    Even brides who only bought their images rarely make albums because the process is quite difficult and time consuming.  Look at how much time it takes us.  And… we’re the professionals that do this all the time.  :-)

Sooooo…  If you’re a photographer & wondering what can you do to help make the process not only easier, but “funner?”  Here are a few tips Zookbinders’ and I would like to share with you.

▪    Show fewer images. You are the expert, edit out all that you don’t need and show only the best images.  For me personally, I have a simple motto; “When in doubt, take it out.”  Which means if I’m reaching for a reason to keep the photo(s), then they’re really not good enough for my client.

▪    Pre-select. Choose the images you’d recommend for their album. She can still see or get them all but help her move the album process along. (Isn’t it nice when a waiter suggests a bottle of wine so that you don’t have to look at a wine list with hundreds of bottles?)

▪    Educate. Explain the process up front. Show how you make the album design-bind-deliver process quick and easy and how difficult it will be if they just buy the disk.  I am glad that Katherine & I had our photographer do it because if not, it would be years if not decades before our album would get done because “life” would take hold of my calendar & it would constantly be pushed to the bottom of the list.

Keep in mind, not every album order goes as planned or absolutely perfect with the design, the print or the bind.  We’re all not perfect — I’ve fallen flat on my face with a couple doozies in my career.  But keep on doing your best each and every time for each and every client.

If you’re a bride & would like to add to this or a photographer & have a few thoughts too, to help make the process better, I’d love to read your comments.

Or you can reach out to me anytime with the plethora of mediums that I love to use.

I’m available just about 24/7 via Twitter, Facebook, the form on my contact page, or the old fashioned phone as well at 888.ESQ.PHTO (888.377.7486) or 562.225.5915.

Have a super week – cheers!

Good morning from Huntington Beach, California everyone!  This week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week is a double feature for you.  I have one song, by two very different artists.  BUT!  What’s very unique about each one is that although they’re on different ends of the “musical graph of style” – they’re very similar in the controversial arena.

First, there’s Limp Bizkit.  Now this is a band that was seriously out there breaking down all sorts of barriers when they came out.  Fred Durst & company rocked arenas at all corners of the earth & their take on what they did was; “If you don’t like it, then you can $%*@ off!”  I even had the rockin’ pleasure of being one of two photographers allowed in to shoot their performance in Hollywood back in the 90’s for Inline Skater Magazine.  The photo above was one of my favourites that were published in the magazine from the event.  Some of the other photos weren’t appropriate for the magazine as they had strippers on stage with them that were a little over the top, but they loved them nonetheless and used a couple.

(Side Note:  I took some heat for the stripper photos as my girlfriend at the time was in the audience felt it was inappropriate to photograph that part of the show.  She didn’t quite see that as a photographer, I was there to document the event for the magazine.  But, I was there to do the my assignment to the best of my abilities.)

Then there’s George Michael.  George Michael & Andrew Ridgeley crash landed on the music industry in the ’80’s with Wham before he went on to become a HUGE mega star with platinum albums and performing with the likes of Sir Elton John.  Unfortunately, George Michael’s career took some setbacks over the years, but from what I’ve seen – he continually does his thing.  Whether we agree with it or not.

As I know and I’m guessing pretty much everyone knows, that to do your own thing (whatever it might be) will sometimes experience some setbacks, frustrations, disappointments, and sacrifices.  But in the end, we need to look ourselves in the mirror for all of our faults and all of our qualities that we possess.

For me, I know that a. I’m not perfect and b. “screw the pooch” and fall flat on my face on a regular basis both in my personal life & professional life.  BUT!  I have zeal and I’m tenacious with constantly doing my best to improve myself in every nook & cranny of my being.  Who I am and what I may stand for & how I go about it may not be the right way for everyone or for me at times, but it’s a journey through life that makes my life my own – unique only to me.

On this crazy path that is my life, there are times that I need to have faith.  Faith in art & music, faith in my relationships and faith in God.  The latter is the most difficult for me and I struggle with it daily.  During my life I have realized that it has something to do with being an abandoned kid & a child of the “Modern Dysfunctional American Family.”  But!  I still do my best to chart a good path in life and practice tolerance and acceptance.  Even if it is at times against all odds (not the Phil Collins song…) and against what mainstream opinion of people may be of me, my life, my actions & behaviours or my business.

So for this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week, I chose “Faith” by George Michael and “Faith” as a cover song by Limp Bizkit.  Both songs are the “same”, but unique and individual on their own.  I’m guessing when Limp Bizkit did the cover, they had to have faith that their audience wouldn’t turn on them for covering George Michael.  And, vice-versa for George Michael being recognized as a potential sell out, allowing Limp Bizkit to cover his song.

Before you check out this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week and you’re thinking… Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Orange County Wedding Photographer that is on the cutting edge of amazing fashion, music and videos, feel free to contact me anytime.

So without further ado, I give you Limp Bizkit and George Michael in “Faith” for today’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week.  And, don’t just have an awesome West Coast Wednesday, but make it a totally positive one for someone else too – cheers!

PS, A colleague of mine: David Jay Tweeted the following just a little bit ago:  “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. – Winston Churchill.”  How “kismet” is that tweet to come up while I’m typing this for you!
