bhiggins0004Good Evening Everyone!  I just got in from an almost Date Night with Katherine that changed very quickly.  Katherine and I were invited to attend an exclusive gallery opening at the Wyndham Costa Mesa of an award winning colleague; Barbara Higgins – who had an exclusive artist reception with wine, hors d’oeuvres and beautiful silver gelatin images abound.

Katherine & I have become close with several people at the property, so we thought it would be great to stop by to enjoy the event, hopefully catch up with our friends; Tom, Marcy and Denise and then head out for a nice dinner afterwards.  Well… that all quickly changed when we walked in the door earlier.

We were greeted by a lovely lady that seemed to know who I was, which kinda threw me off because as you all know, I have been to my share of social gatherings, but I couldn’t place the face.  Then Barbara introduced herself and whew – I didn’t feel like such a goober.  She noticed that I had my camera with me and asked if I could take a few photos of the event for her.  I of course was jumping out of my skin to say yes, but did the responsible husband thing & checked with Katherine first as it was supposed to be our date night.  Katherine was totally supportive, said yes and as she popped out for a quick bite – my shutter started firing away catching paparazzi inspired shots.

Barbara’s guests were totally cool and I had an absolutely great time covering her event.  Not to mention that I was able to pause here & there when I was shooting to check out her work, which is stunning.

And!  They Wyndham and Barbara Higgins donated 20% of the proceeds from all art sold tonight to help support art education at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa and Festival of Children Foundation.

Here are a few snaps from tonight’s event & I hope you’re having a great weekend – cheers!

dojopodcast-61x140Good Afternoon Everyone! If you’ve been keeping up on what some of my cryptic Tweets have been this week out of Huntington Beach and various locations in the Orange County area, then today’s podcast probably won’t come as a surprise to you.

We had the honour of chatting with world renown photographer; John Mireles from Photographer’s Toolkit fame in San Diego and around the globe to discuss using contracts in your photography business.

During our conversations we cover what elements make up a good contract, how to present a contract to clients, and why you need to have a solid contract.  In today’s day & age, you just can’t have enough CYA if you know what I’m talking about.

Feel free to subscribe to our podcast with Camera Dojo by clicking the iTunes button below & have a super West Coast Wednesday – cheers!

Good Morning Everyone!  Straight out of Huntington Beach, California is a cup of coffee, some great tunes and this week’s West Coast Wednesday’s Video Of The Week.

If you caught my Tweet on Monday night, you might have had an idea where my head was at the beginning of the week as I’m working on various projects, post production, 1 more album design and something secret that even Katherine barely knows only a couple bits & pieces of information about.  It’s something so secret that you won’t believe it when it drops!

This musician had a couple of issues throughout the years with his band mates, but I have to say that he has always been an excellent musician and writer.  So without further ado, here’s a throwback from the ’80’s and it’s Andy Taylor from Duran Duran and Power Station with his smash solo hit; “Take It Easy” from the cult classic film: “American Anthem.”

I love the main thread of the song and that’s also the title of the song.  I think it’s really fitting for everyone to take a moment & just “Take it easy, on yourself…”  How cool and profound is that line!?!

I hope you’re having a great start to your West Coast Wednesday & enjoy the video – cheers!

londonwh0001Good Morning Everyone!  This morning’s entry is brought to you over a cup of coffee in Huntington Beach after a night of complete debauchery of all 5 senses over dinner last night.

Ok, we really didn’t go to London, UK (I wish!) – BUT we did go to Gordon Ramsay at the London West Hollywood for dinner.  All I can say is it’s so not cheap, but worth using a credit card for dinner (this dinner I had to actually save up for!).  Last night was more than just a meal, it was an experience and a glimpse into why people that live in the lap of luxury enjoy such fine exquisite meals.

Katherine & I created our own 4 course dinner over apple martinis and it was complete decadence.  From the smooooo-ooooth apple martinis, to the delectable beet root salad, the English Shepherds Pie that I had and the exquisite desert over wine – it was perfect.

The service was red carpet all the way & the E! channel was there too, roaming around filming for some lifestyle program that we may be in.  Only in LA!  If you ever want to dive off a cliff with a dinner fit for royalty in a warm environment – THIS is the place to go.

I brought my camera with me, but in true fashion – I didn’t manage to get a photo of Katherine & I together.  It’s the curse of being a photographer, you’re constantly behind the camera.

Have a super weekend – cheers!

genalex0023Good Morning Everyone!  I’ve got a fantastic bit that I would like to share with you straight out of Huntington Beach in Orange County.

Just about all of us deal with it and I think it’s only the movie stars and rock stars that don’t have too much of an issue with it.  So here goes… this week’s Wedding Photography Tip Of The Week is about taking better photographs when you’re a bit on the heavier side (like me!).

Like I said, almost all of us deal with this and here are a few tips from moi that has helped me capture beautiful and flattering portraits on your Wedding Day and your Engagement Shoot:

  • Avoid sitting down in your portraits. If possible, do your best to keep standing whenever possible. This keeps bellies from rounding out and bunching up.
  • Have your photos shot from above when possible. Avoid being shot from a lower angle.  This helps create an inverted pyramid with our body types.
  • If you’re wider than thicker, turn your body to the side. If you’re thicker than wider, do your best to be photographed from the front, slightly turned.
  • Ladies, turn slightly to the side AND have rock your hip away from the camera. This makes a large hip appear smaller.  I like to call this my “ANTM” – America’s Next Top Model pose)  Totally gets a laugh every time!
  • For your Engagement Shoot, black and/or dark clothing helps to make larger people appear smaller.
  • Also for your Engagement Shoot, keep the horizontal lines and patterns to a minimum.  Vertical lines create a slenderizing effect.
  • Standing up straight is especially important.  Do your best to roll your shoulders back. You’ll likely need to watch this and catch yourself more than once not standing straight up.  I have a “String” approach that works like a charm.
  • If you can, you’ll want to conceal your belly behind a bouquet, chair or another person.
  • In group portraits, do your best to not stand at the edges in the portraits.
  • Lean forward a bit & push your face forward to minimize double chins.  This creates a shadow under your chin and it takes about 5-10 lbs off in the pictures.  100% guaranteed laughter & some serious superman leans will happen!
  • Keep your arms bent and away from the body to minimize the upper arm area which can look larger if it is held against the body.
  • Be confident & happy.  You’re in good hands with a professional photographer & I’ll make sure you’re assisted in your portraits all the way through with pleanty of laughs as well.

britneyscott0002I’m sure that this wedding tip may sting a bit, but like I said – nearly all of us work with what we’ve got and with a few adjustments here & there – your portraits will be smashing.

I hope you’re having a great week & check back soon for more Wedding Tips that will help you get the most out of your day – cheers!
