Good morning from Newport Beach everyone!  As I’m sitting here at my desk sipping on my morning coffee thinking about some of the weddings that I’ve been photographing and the music that has been played at the receptions – it seems that a lot of people are really enjoying some of the classic hip hop, rock & dance music.  So when I thought of what I wanted to share with you today for this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week, I thought – hey, how about some classic hip hop.

Well… it just so happens that one of my favourite hip hop groups has a new album, single & video out and I just had to share it with you.  They’re a trio out of New York City and have been around for what seems like ages as I’ve been following them since the 80’s but to others that just discovered them, they’re totally brand new.

The hip hop group that I’m referring to is the Beastie Boys.  If you’re not too familiar with them, check out their history that I picked up on Wikipedia, it’s awesome!

“Beastie Boys are an American hip hop trio from New York City. The group consists of Mike D (Michael Diamond)MCA (Adam Yauch), and Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz).

The Beastie Boys began as hardcore punk band in 1979, first appearing on the compilation cassette New York Thrash before releasing their first EP, Polly Wog Stew, in 1982. After achieving moderate local success with the 1983 release of their experimental hip-hop” Cooky Puss, they made the transition to hip-hop in 1984 and a string of successful 12″ singles followed by their debut album Licensed to Ill in 1986 which received international critical acclaim and commercial success. As of 2010, they have sold 22 million albums in the United States and 40 million albums worldwide.

They are one of the longest lived hip-hop acts worldwide and continue to enjoy commercial and critical success in 2011, nearly 25 years after the release of their debut album. On September 27, 2007, they were nominated for induction into theRock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2009, the group released digitally remastered deluxe editions of their albums Paul’s BoutiqueCheck Your HeadIll Communication and Hello Nasty. Their eighth studio album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, was released on May 3, 2011, and received positive reviews.”

Just that little bit of history about the Beastie Boys is totally impressive!

But before you check out this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week and you’re thinking… Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Newport Beach Wedding Photographer (Previously a Huntington Beach Wedding Photographer) that loves funky and sassy dance rock, fashion, photography and art, feel free to contact me anytime.

PS, Here is a quote that I thought I would share with you from the Above & Beyond performance that I just experienced at Sutra Lounge in Costa Mesa: “No Dream Is Too Big” (I shared some pictures & videos on my personal Facebook page – check ’em out!).  Above & Beyond had that up on a screen along with a lot of others throughout their performance & happened to jot that one down when I was down on the dance floor with the couple thousand other fans.  It really spoke to me & I had a feeling that it would speak to someone else as well.

PSS, Thanks so much for your patience with a lot of the events that I’ve been shooting and not able to get online as quickly as I prefer.  There’s quite a bit of growth happening with Esquire Photography and I’ve recently needed to bring on a Business Manager to give me more time to take care of the weddings and events that I’m photographing around Newport Beach, San Diego and Ventura.  But my regular blogging schedule will resume VERY soon.  Thanks!

Good morning everyone!  This is one Newport Beach Wedding Photographer that has been on a total British Invasion and European DJ infatuation with music lately.  So to “mix” it up a little, I have one of my favourite tracks from a DJ to share with you for today’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week to wake you up from Newport Beach.

As I mentioned, today’s Video Of The Week is one of my favourite tracks from a DJ to share with you.  But what I didn’t say is that this song is from one of the most influential and amazing DJs in the music industry.

There are quite a few to choose from, but this morning’s treat is from Armin van Buuren.  If you’re not too familiar with Armin van Buuren check out this bit of information from his bio – it’s totally rad!

Armin van Buuren has been named number one in the prestigious DJ MAG Top 100 poll four times in a row, as the first DJ in the history of the DJ Magazine and an indication of his prolific output over the more than 14 years he’s been dj’ing and producing. Being the official World’s Most Popular DJ is just one of his many achievements, but the driving force behind his success is an overriding passion for dance music.”

Good morning from Newport Beach everyone!  This is one sleepy Wedding Photographer that has been on a total British Invasion with music lately.  So in the essence of keeping that theme going, I have one heck of a toe tapping, eye brow raising and sassy West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week to wake you up from Newport Beach.

Now you’re probably wondering why I’m up so early sharing this with you, it’s because I’m heading out for a staff portrait shoot at a dentist office in Huntington Beach that I’ve been hired to do and recording a new episode of “How To Make The Most Out Of Your Wedding Day” too.  All starting at 8:00 a.m. – whoa!  So tell me I’m not brewing the coffee a little earlier today here at the new Esquire Photography HQ in Newport Beach.

Ok… back to the British Invasion!  As I mentioned, today’s Video Of The Week is an eyebrow raiser and a sassy video.  But what I didn’t say is that it has two of the most influential, controversial and sexy artist in the music industry.

I’m talking about Robbie Williams & Kylie Minogue from the UK.  If you’re not too familiar with Robbie Williams or Kylie Minogue, check out their information – it’s totally rad!

Robbie Williams (via IMDb): Robbie Williams was born in Stoke On Trent, England on February 13th, 1974. Having played in school productions of “Oliver” and, obviously showing a flair for entertaining, Williams’ mother saw an advert for auditions to be in a new boy band which he applied for and, at age 16, was a member of Take That. After the incredible success of Take That and countless number one hits, Robbie Williams departed from the band in July, 1995. He started his solo career slowly with modest sales for his debut album “Life Thru A Lens” on Chrysalis Records. Record sales exploded after the single “Angels” was released for Christmas 1997 – a beautiful ballad, written within 20 minutes, which recently got voted the second best song of all times by British voters. Since then, Robbie has released 4 more original albums: “I’ve Been Expecting You”, containing the hit singles “Millennium”, “Strong”, “No Regrets” and “She’s the One”, the follow up “Sing When Your Winning”, where he dueted with Kylie Minogue, the million seller “Escapology” and the live album “What We Did Last Summer”, which was recorded in front of 375,000 people at his legendary Knebworth performances.

Kylie Minogue (via IMDb): Kylie Ann Minogue was born on 28 May, 1968. The eldest of three children, Kylie’s acting career began early, but it was her role as Charlene in the Australian soap “Neighbours”(1985) which established Kylie as an international star. Her singing career began purely by accident when a record company executive heard Kylie’s rendition of Little Eva’s 1962 hit “The Loco-Motion”. She signed with PWL Records and hit-makers Stock/Aitken/Waterman in 1987. Five albums and a greatest hits compilation followed, and she made history by having more than 20 consecutive top ten hits in the UK. Her motion picture debut came with the starring role of Lola in The Delinquents (1989). She left PWL Records in 1992 to head in a decidedly more mature musical direction, and her self-titled debut on deconstruction records was released in 1994, spawning chart hits like “Confide In Me” and “Put Yourself In My Place”.

PS, I hope I didn’t disappoint too many people this week as I was unable to launch Monday’s episode of “How To Make The Most Out Of Your Wedding Day” due to moving & AT&T not installing my UVerse (I’ve been using my Sprint MiFi on their 4G network & quite bluntly hasn’t been that bad!).  So… in the essence of doing a re-run, totally check out the uber cool and Jagermeister sponsored; DJ Neko who I had the honour of working with as the wedding photographer for my sister; Tawnya & Kurt’s Temecula Wedding Day that I photographed at the opulent Falkner Winery. on the latest episode of “How To Make The Most Out Of Your Wedding Day” – where he’s sharing some terrific advice on how to save some time, some money & your sanity planning your wedding.

  • David Esquire - Thanks for the note Belinda. What was totally cool for me with this music video was the joy of pre-visualization! I knew exactly what I wanted the end result to be and an idea of the song even before I filmed it. Crazzzzzy! :-)

Good morning from the totally awesome Orange County city; Huntington Beach everyone!  I’m a Wedding Photographer that has a special West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week that I think you’ll enjoy.

But what makes this West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week special is that it’s not inspired by me.  It’s actually inspired by my fellow photographer and totally awesome great friend; Belinda from Pinky’s Pix down in San Diego.  If you’re not too familiar with her, I can tell you that she comes from a family of photographers.  In fact, she is a 4th generation photographer and has been shooting since she was 14 – which totally has me beat.  I’m only a 2nd generation photographer.  So to say that photography runs even deeper in her blood is definitely an understatement.

Recently she and I were in San Diego at a “Secret Garden” doing some artistic and creative photography and the entire time we were there, I felt as if my late late mother; Reina Francis Feleciano Mills was there with me.  I can’t really explain it but, it just seemed like she was all around me.  To the right is a photo that Belinda captured that day.  Ahhhfreakin’mayyyzeeeeeng!

As I was thinking about what to share today, I remembered a conversation about a band and a song that I was having with Belinda.  But this isn’t just any ordinary song.  It’s Belinda’s favourite song.  So I wanted to take her musical and creative inspiration that emiates from her and share it with you for this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video.

So… I thought I would return the gesture & dedicate this video to her for the generousity she did with capturing all the beautiful photos and dedicating them to my mother.

Now that you know where this week’s video is inspired from, I’ll let you in on the band.  As I mentioned – it’s an 80’s group that I totally dig.  The group is When In Rome and the song is “The Promise.”  Here’s a bit of When In Rome’s history & well well well – they’re originally from the UK.  Awesome!

“When In Rome are an English New Wave trio, originally consisting of vocalists Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann, and keyboards player Michael Floreale. They are best known for their 1988 single, “The Promise“.

Michael Floreale and Andy O’Connell were recruited by Clive Farrington to replace departed members of his Manchester-based group Beau Leisure. Floreale and Farrington began to write songs together. Later, Farrington and Floreale saw Andrew Mann, a beat poet and had him join their performances. O’Connell left the group; the remaining trio recorded some demos — sometimes including Mann’s friend Corinne Drewery — while seeking a recording deal.

The group was signed by Virgin UK subsidiary 10 Records. Producers Ben Rogan (who had worked with Sade) and Richard James Burgess (Five StarLiving in a BoxColonel AbramsSpandau Ballet) took special interest in the trio’s song “The Promise,” issued first as a 12″ dance disk. When the song became popular, hitting the top of Billboard’s Dance Club Play chart, Virgin ordered an album. A remixed version of “The Promise” was the first single from their self-titled debut album. It was an instant success, barely missing the Top Ten in the United States, peaking at #11.”
