Keeping it Professional
By Ashley Drake

I am a very fortunate bride. My fiancé and I agree on 99% of the items for our wedding, and we agree about what they should cost. We are blessed in that we have a great support system, and a fairly forgiving budget. We did however make one mistake in the beginning of our wedding planning; that we quickly learned from.

I hired a friend to take engagement photos. Unfortunately, while the photos were good, they were now what we were looking for in engagement photos. This person’s strong suit was not in the type of photography that my fiancé and I prefer. We had two different shoots, and our friend was LATE for both of them.

When planning your wedding, it is imperative that you hire professionals, with references and good track records. In doing so, you will assure that the biggest day yet in your life will run smoothly and come off without a hitch. It is important to have multiple consultations with all of these people, starting from day one. It’s a lot like your dress. I went in for 3 separate fitting for my wedding dress; I have also had multiple “fittings” with my photographer, caterer, officiant, hair and make-up people, florist and DJ.

Knowing these people are on the same page with you will help you get through your day with as few potential issues as possible. Starting from the beginning, a professional hair and make-up artist will work quickly and efficiently. They will also bring you into their salon ahead of time for a run through. This will not only give you a chance to discuss what you like and don’t like, but will give your team of stylists a chance to get to know your hair and skin, and to provide an accurate timing for how long they think it will take to get you ready. Additionally, as professionals, they will know to pad their schedule in order to allow for any minor hick-ups that may occur.

When it comes to your ceremony, make sure that you as a couple, and your officiant are on the same page and speed. We chose a close friend’s father to be out officiant; we know that he has done more than one hundred weddings, and is personable, and will keep everything on track for the ceremony. This is important, because if your ceremony runs long, or short—this could really foul up your dinner/reception plans. This is also one of the reasons it is critical to have a rehearsal as close to your wedding day as possible. Making sure your officiant is well practiced and rehearsed will ensure your ceremony go well and according to plan.

For your reception, the caterer and the DJ should work seamlessly. They should both have a schedule of events, as well as direct communication with one another. I recommend a meeting with all parties involved a few days ahead of the event. This will give you an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have, and to make sure that everyone is on the same page. It also helps to have printed schedules for all of your vendors the day of.

Most importantly, DO NOT take any chances on the photography of your wedding and reception. This is one of the most critical points of your wedding. These are the photos that you will be showing your children and grand children. It is CRITICAL that you do not leave this important task up to just anyone. These are photos that you will be looking at for years to come, and it is important that they reflect you as a couple in style and substance. We have a friend, who was married 20 years ago, and to save money—he let his buddy take his wedding photos. They received two OK portraits, and the rest of their photos did not turn out. He says, to this very day—that this was one of the biggest mistakes that he made. If he had it to do all over, he would choose and pay money for the very best photographer he could. He doesn’t have an album, nor does he have many photos or mementos of the day he married his best friend; and love of his life. 20 years later, he is no longer friends with the “buddy” who took his wedding photos because of this very item.

Its very costly to get married. Its even more costly to have a large wedding with all the accouterments that we think are required of us. Please, don’t cut corners and hire friends to do the jobs of professionals. If necessary, cut in ways that can, but do not sacrifice a job well done for a few dollars. If friends and family persistently indicate they want to help; and do your hair/make-up, photography etc.; politely explain to them that you want them to enjoy your wedding, not have to work at it. This is the one day its all about you—make sure it stays that way, and that you are able to enjoy it.

  • Kris Hinh - 100% True. I don’t know how many times I try to explain my clients that in the end of their wedding day. The images from a professional wedding photographer is something they really need to invest in. It all comes down to the client that value their wedding day and their photographer.

  • David Esquire - Thanks for the comment Kris! I love it how so many professionals are rising to the call & lifting up our industry as a whole. There’s a very exciting time that lies ahead for everyone indeed! :-)

Good morning from Huntington Beach everyone!  If you’ve been following my Twitter and/or Facebook status updates lately, you’re probably wondering what in the world is this “Super Secret Project” for Brides and Grooms that I’m working on all over Southern California.

Well here’s what it is….

HAHA!  Gotcha!  I can’t say yet, that would just be plain silly to spring it on you before it’s totally finished & ready to go.  But if you’d like to set a reminder on your calendar – I’m planning on dropping it after Thanksgiving next month.  Just in time for the holidays!

Now back to your regular scheduled programming with today’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week…

I’ve been listening to quite a bit of music lately as I’ve been buried under post production, meetings & the “Super Secret Project” for Brides and Grooms.  With all the music I’ve been playing in the background, I’ve been totally hooked on quite a bit of Rap.  One of the groups that I like is Three 6 Mafia and it just so happens that they blew up a video with DJ Tiesto.

If you’re not too familiar with Three 6 Mafia, you’ve got to check this snippit out from their website.  I love it!

“Three 6 Mafia had a plan, too. They set out to be kings of their native Memphis, Tennessee. Now, nearly 20 years into their professional careers, DJ Paul and Juicy “J” have become one of music’s biggest success stories. They have a host of gold and platinum singles and albums, have produced for such platinum rappers as Ludacris and UGK, and have released albums under their own independent Hypnotize Minds imprint that have combined to sell several million units.”

Then there’s DJ Tiesto.  I’m a huge fan and could go on & on about DJ Tiesto, but I’ll sum it up and say that I think he’s one of the most amazing DJs of all time.  Definitely check out his Website and there’s also some terrific information on him on Wikipedia as well.

But before you check out this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week and you’re thinking… Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Orange County Wedding Photographer that is supports helping heal our environment for our future, feel free to contact me anytime.

I’m available just about 24/7 via TwitterFacebook, the form on my contact page, or the old fashioned phone as well at 888.ESQ.PHTO (888.377.7486) or 562.225.5915.

So without further ado, I give you Three 6 Mafia featuring DJ Tiesto in “Feel It.”  So feel free to sit back with your favourite morning beverage and enjoy the video.

Have an awesome West Coast Wednesday and also remember to make it a totally positive one for someone else too – cheers!

It’s sweltering hot, everything seems on the edge and it’s downright just plain brutal in Huntington Beach everyone!  Hmmm…. This really sounds like one of my favourite artists too.

If you were keeping up on my Twitter and Facebook updates when the MTV Video Music Awards were going on,  you would have read the excitement in my voice with all the awards that Lady Gaga won.  As an artist, I love her brashness in fashion, braveness to lay it all out on the line and whether someone likes it or not – she keeps on doing what she loves from her heart.  The best word I can think of is to quote my favourite actor; Keanu Reeves – “Whoa!”

I’ve shared Lady Gaga with you before on my blog, so I won’t go into all the amazing things that I look up to & respect about her as an artist AND that she doesn’t waver with what she believes in – standing firm and proud sharing with the world her opinions (Like helping to repeal Hate and Ignorance).  But, I do think that this is an awesome statement she shares on her website:  “And, now, I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time.”

I have a similar thought… Except for me it’s with one photo at a time.

But before you check out this week’s West Coast Wednesday Video Of The Week and you’re thinking… Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Orange County Wedding Photographer that is supports helping heal our environment for our future, feel free to contact me anytime.

So without further ado, I give you Lady Gaga in “Telephone” – the official explicit version in all 9 minutes and 32 seconds worth (Which is pleanty of time to enjoy a morning beverage!).  So feel free to sit back, enjoy the video, and maybe think about some ways on how we as a collective of people can help educate each other and someday eliminate hate & ignorance.  I know, I know…. I’m a “Utopianist” and that’s a tall order & a huge dream.  But if we aim for the stars and land on the moon, isn’t that making things better?

Have an awesome West Coast Wednesday and also remember to make it a totally positive one for someone else too – cheers!

PS, here’s a little something I thought of and shared yesterday on Twitter & my Facebook Fan Page: “Easy Breeds Mediocrity.”  Kinda makes you think!?!

Good Evening Everyone!  Well check this out!  I’m back in my office after day two of working on my “Super Secret Project” that will be dropping soon for Brides and Grooms and I’ve got a delicious collection of some portraits from Carina & Tim’s Engagement Shoot at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

I left for Carina & Tim’s Engagement Shoot after Virginia & Shawn’s Wedding up in Ventura at the Wedgewood Golf Club and got there just at our start time.  I was getting so nervous though as I gave myself just over 3 hours to get to Disneyland from Ventura and Katherine & hit more traffic in that one trip with the several accidents we passed than I ever remember.  In fact, it should have only taken 1 hour to an hour 1/2 – but not that day.  Crazy!

While we were at Downtown Disney waiting for Carina & Tim, we bumped into Ashley & David who also had their Engagement Shoot at Disneyland, is getting married in Monterey this fall and Ashley is also a Guest Writer on my blog as well (along with resident attendees of Glow & Electronica at California Adventure too!).

Carina & Tim’s Engagement Shoot kicked off at California Adventure where we walked around at some terrific spots for great portraits and having the opportunity to get to know each other better too.  After we left California Adventure, we headed to Disneyland for more fun and photos.  The timing was perfect too as I was able to capture a romantic portrait of them in front of the castle with nobody in the background.  It was a little bit before the fireworks display and it worked out to our adventure.

We had so much fun during their Engagement Shoot that night.  It was such an honour to get to know them better as I knew it would make such a difference during their wedding day.  And!  I was able to see how adventurous Carina is too as she made a grand exit from one of the spots that I took some fun portraits of them.

But before you check out a few of my favourites from Carina & Tim’s Engagement Shoot at Disneyland and California Adventure in Anaheim and you’re thinking to yourself… Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Orange County Wedding Photographer in Huntington Beach, California that shoots weddings all over from OC to LA to Ventura and to San Diego.  Feel free to contact me anytime!

Good evening from Huntington Beach everyone!  I’ve been locked in at Esquire Photography HQ after returning from my “Super Secret Project” working on some more artistic edits from Virginia & Shawn’s Ventura Wedding I photographed at the Wedgewood Golf Club.

I had the honour of Virginia & Shawn’s wedding and all I can say is that their wedding day was so relaxing and fun – that everyone who attended absolutely enjoyed themselves.  I think that this was partly due to Virginia and Shawn taking a hand in the wedding planning along with Sarah & Amy from the Wedgewood overseeing every detail from the petals from Passion Flowers in Ventura down the ceremony to the reception.  Everything was perfect!

Virginia looked stunning in her wedding dress from David’s Bridal.  Quite honestly, I thought she was wearing a couture dress – perhaps a gown from Pronovias or one of the other amazing designers that I’ve seen over the year.  She looked totally like royalty to the “nth degree.”

So before you check out Virginia & Shawn’s wedding at the Wedgewood Golf Club in you guessed it – beautiful Ventura, California (aka; The Valley!) and you’re thinking to yourself…  Hey – I’d really like to get to know this Orange County Wedding Photographer in Huntington Beach that wants to enjoy life to the fullest and capture all the infinite memories that happen throughout the day, then feel free to get in touch with me anytime.

I’m available just about 24/7 via TwitterFacebook, the form on my contact page, or the old fashioned phone as well at 888.ESQ.PHTO (888.377.7486) or 562.225.5915.

Now without further ado, here is Virginia & Shawn’s wedding in a yummy slide show I put together.  I hope you’re having a great weekend & their wedding is available on Pictage too for professional prints, canvas wraps and so much more – cheers!
